Park files in the notch with the File Tray

Drag files to the MacBook notch to keep them in the Tray while you find where they go, then drag them out into any app or folder.

Checked against the app on

The Tray is a shelf in the notch. Drop files on it while you switch apps or folders, then drag them out where they belong.

Add files

  1. Start dragging one or more files, from Finder, Mail, a browser or another app.
  2. Move them up to the notch. It opens and shows Tray (and AirDrop).
  3. Drop them on Tray.

The notch then shows a small Tray activity so you know files are waiting. Screenshots, images from Photos and files dragged out of other apps work too.

Use the files

  • Drag out: drag a file from the Tray into a Finder window, an email, a chat or any app that accepts files. Select several to drag them together.
  • Share: use the buttons under the files to send them by AirDrop, Mail or Messages, save them to iCloud Drive, or open the share menu. See share files from the Tray.
  • Remove: click the × on a file, or clear the whole Tray.

Your originals stay where they are

When you drop a file from Finder, the Tray points to the original instead of making a copy, so it takes no extra space. Removing it from the Tray never deletes the original. If you’re about to move or delete the original, choose Keep a Copy on the file and the Tray keeps its own copy.

Files that only exist while you drag, such as a photo from the Photos app or a screenshot thumbnail, are saved as copies in the Tray.

Tray settings

In Settings → Drag&Drop:

  • Tray live activity shows the Tray in the notch after you drop files.
  • Tray → Scroll direction lays files out Horizontal or Vertical.
  • Tray → Hide remove button hides the × on each file.

Files in the Tray are kept when you quit or restart NotchMind.
