AirDrop is the fastest way to move a file from your Mac to an iPhone, iPad or another Mac nearby. There are more ways to start it than most people know.
1. The Share menu
Right-click a file in Finder, choose Share, then AirDrop, and pick the device. In most apps, the Share button in the toolbar has AirDrop too. This is the way most people use.
2. The AirDrop window
In Finder, choose Go → AirDrop, or press ⌘ ⇧ R. Nearby devices appear in the window; drag files onto one to send them.
3. Drag to the notch
NotchMind, which I make, turns the notch into a drop target. Start dragging a file, move it to the top of the screen, and drop it on AirDrop. The AirDrop window opens with your files ready, and the notch shows the transfer’s progress. Files already parked in the notch’s Tray have an AirDrop button too. See AirDrop from the notch.
Who can send to you
To receive on your Mac, open Control Centre, click AirDrop, and choose Contacts Only or Everyone for 10 Minutes. Files you receive go to your Downloads folder.
When AirDrop doesn’t work
- Turn on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on both devices. AirDrop needs both, even without a Wi‑Fi network.
- Wake and unlock the other device. A locked iPhone with its screen off may not appear.
- Check who can send. If the other device is set to Receiving Off or Contacts Only and you’re not in its contacts, you won’t see it.
- Move closer. AirDrop works within about 9 metres.
- Turn off Personal Hotspot on the iPhone for a moment; it can get in the way.
