Shake a file to open the Basket

Shake a file while you drag it and a basket appears at your pointer. Drop files in, drag them out later; the Basket shares its files with the Tray.

Checked against the app on

The notch is at the top of the screen, which can be a long way to drag. The Basket comes to you instead.

Open the Basket

  1. Start dragging a file.
  2. Shake it quickly from side to side a few times.
  3. A basket appears next to your pointer saying Drop here.
  4. Let go over it (Release to keep it).

Drop as many files as you like, one drag at a time. Shaking again brings the same basket back.

Get files out

  • Drag a single file out of the Basket into any app or folder.
  • Drag all drags every file at once.
  • The sharing buttons send them by AirDrop, Mail or Messages or save them to iCloud Drive. See share files from the Tray.
  • Remove takes one file out. Clear basket empties it.
  • Close hides the basket. Your files stay.

The Basket and the Tray are the same files

Files wait in the Basket and in the notch’s Tray at the same time, until you drag them out. Add a file in one and it’s in the other. If you drop a file that’s already there, the Basket says Already in the basket.

What you can drop

Files and folders from Finder, images from Photos and browsers, screenshots and files dragged out of other apps. If a file can’t be kept, the Basket says Couldn’t keep that file.

Turn it off

Turn off Basket in Settings → Drag&Drop if you shake files for another reason.
