Control Apple Music, Spotify and YouTube Music from the notch

See what's playing in the MacBook notch, then play, pause, skip and like songs without switching apps. Works with Apple Music, Spotify and more.

Checked against the app on

When something plays, the collapsed notch shows its artwork and a small equalizer. Open the notch to see the full player.

What the player does

  • Play, pause and skip forward or back.
  • Scrub through the song on the progress bar.
  • Favorite the song, in apps that support it, such as Apple Music.
  • Switch speakers: send the sound to AirPods or another output. See switch speakers.
  • Pop out the player so it floats anywhere on screen. See the floating player.

Which apps work

By default NotchMind shows whatever macOS reports as playing, which covers Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, browsers and most other players. To limit it to one app:

  1. Open Settings → Now Playing.
  2. Set Playback source to Any source, Apple Music, Spotify or YouTube Music.

Turn it on or off

Now Playing live activity in the same section shows or hides the player in the notch. Music keeps playing either way.

Control music without opening the notch

Set Play / Pause, Next Track and Previous Track shortcuts in keyboard shortcuts. They control whatever is playing, in any app.

The buttons don’t do anything

The buttons need the Media Controls permission. Open Settings → General → Permissions and grant it. More fixes in music doesn’t show in the notch.
