The Converter page on Home turns a file into another format. Everything happens on your Mac with macOS’s own tools; nothing is uploaded.
Convert a file
- Open the notch and swipe to the Converter page.
- Drag a file onto it, or choose Click to select file.
- Pick the format to convert to from the format menu.
- Choose Convert file to … with your format.
The notch closes while the file converts and a small converter activity shows its progress. When it’s done, it shows a check mark; open it and choose Show in Finder to see the new file.
What it converts to
| You drop | You can make |
|---|---|
| An image | PNG, JPEG, HEIC, TIFF, GIF, BMP or PDF, plus WEBP and AVIF where your macOS can write them |
| A video | MP4, MOV or M4V |
| An audio file | AAC, AIFF, M4A, FLAC, WAV and other audio formats |
| A folder | ZIP, TAR or TAR.GZ |
| Any file | ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ or GZ |
Images, video and audio can also be packed into an archive.
Where the result goes
By default, next to the original with -converted added to its name, for example photo-converted.jpg. Change that, and the quality, in converter settings.
When a conversion fails
- This media file cannot be exported by macOS. The file uses a format or protection macOS can’t read.
- Could not create this image format. That format isn’t available on your version of macOS. Pick another.
