How to record your screen on a Mac (and stop the recording)

Record your whole screen or part of it on a Mac with Shift-Command-5, include your microphone, and every way to stop the recording when you're done.

By Rudra Satani, maker of NotchMind ·

Start recording

  1. Press ⇧ ⌘ 5.
  2. Choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion in the toolbar.
  3. Open Options to pick where it’s saved, a timer, and a microphone.
  4. Click Record.

QuickTime Player can do the same: File → New Screen Recording.

Include your voice

In Options, choose a Microphone. The built-in recorder doesn’t capture the sound your Mac plays, only the microphone; recording system audio needs another app.

Stop recording

  • Click the stop button in the menu bar.
  • Press ⌃ ⌘ Esc.
  • Press ⇧ ⌘ 5 again and click the stop button.

With NotchMind, which I make, the notch also shows that you’re recording, with a timer and a stop button, and then shows the finished video so you can open or delete it. See screen recordings in the notch.

Where it goes

Recordings save to the Desktop unless you choose another place in Options → Save to. See change where screenshots are saved.
