How to turn off the screenshot thumbnail on a Mac

Stop the floating preview that appears in the corner after every Mac screenshot, and what to use instead to drag, copy or delete a capture.

Since macOS Mojave, every screenshot shows a small floating thumbnail in the bottom-right corner for a few seconds. It’s handy for marking up, but it delays the file being saved and gets in the way if you take several in a row.

Turn it off

  1. Press ⇧ ⌘ 5 to open the Screenshot toolbar.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Untick Show Floating Thumbnail.

From now on, screenshots save straight away. Press Esc to close the toolbar.

What you lose

The thumbnail is the quickest way to drag a screenshot into a chat or mark it up. Without it, you have to find the file on your Desktop.

Or swap it for a notch preview

NotchMind, which I make, shows each screenshot in the MacBook notch instead. From there you can drag it into an app, copy it, click it to edit, show it in Finder or delete it. While that’s on, NotchMind hides the macOS thumbnail for you so you don’t see both, and puts your setting back when you quit. See screenshots in the notch.

Turn it back on

Open ⇧ ⌘ 5 → Options again and tick Show Floating Thumbnail.
