How to paste without formatting on a Mac

Paste plain text on a Mac with Option-Shift-Command-V, make it the default in some apps, and strip formatting from what you copy for good.

Copy text from a web page and it often brings fonts, colours and links with it. Here’s how to paste just the words.

The shortcut

Press ⌥ ⇧ ⌘ V, Paste and Match Style. It works in Mail, Notes, Pages, TextEdit and most Mac apps. In Google Docs and many web apps, ⇧ ⌘ V does the same.

From the Edit menu

Look for Edit → Paste and Match Style, or Paste as Plain Text in some apps.

Make the clipboard plain

If you paste into an app without that option, strip formatting first: paste into TextEdit set to plain text (Format → Make Plain Text), copy again, then paste.

With a clipboard tool

NotchMind, which I make, offers Copy Clean when you copy text, which copies it again as plain text, so the next ordinary ⌘ V pastes without formatting. See actions for what you copy.
