How to copy on iPhone and paste on Mac with Universal Clipboard

Universal Clipboard lets you copy on one Apple device and paste on another. How to turn it on, what it needs, and what to do when it doesn't work.

Copy text, an image or a link on your iPhone, then press ⌘ V on your Mac. That’s Universal Clipboard, and it works the other way too.

What it needs

  • Both devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
  • Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on, on both.
  • Handoff on:
    • Mac: System Settings → General → AirDrop & Handoff → Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
    • iPhone: Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity (or AirPlay & Handoff) → Handoff.
  • The devices near each other.

Using it

Copy on one device and paste on the other within a couple of minutes. Big images take a moment to arrive.

When it doesn’t work

  • Turn Handoff off and on again on both devices.
  • Toggle Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi.
  • Check both are signed in to the same Apple Account in Settings.

And clipboard history?

Universal Clipboard holds one item at a time. If you want to paste something from earlier, you need clipboard history: Spotlight in macOS Tahoe has one, and so does NotchMind, which I make. See clipboard history on Mac.

One caution: what you copy on your iPhone, including passwords, reaches your Mac too. See why to clear your clipboard after copying a key.
