How to check your MacBook's battery health

See your MacBook's battery condition, maximum capacity and cycle count, what the numbers mean, and settings that help the battery last longer.

Battery health

Open System Settings → Battery and click the ⓘ next to Battery Health. It shows the condition (Normal or Service Recommended) and, on recent macOS, the Maximum Capacity as a percentage of new.

Cycle count

Hold ⌥, choose → System Information, then Power. Cycle Count shows how many full charge cycles the battery has done. Apple rates MacBook batteries for 1,000 cycles.

Help it last

  • Keep Optimized Battery Charging on in the Battery Health panel; it waits to finish charging past 80% until you need it.
  • Avoid leaving the MacBook in heat, such as a hot car.
  • Keep macOS up to date.

Know when to unplug

NotchMind, which I make, can tell you when the battery reaches the level you choose, such as 80%, and warn you when it’s low. See battery alerts in the notch.
