How to use your iPhone's hotspot on a Mac

Connect your Mac to your iPhone's Personal Hotspot in one click with Instant Hotspot, save data while you're on it, and keep an eye on the phone's battery.

Connect with Instant Hotspot

If your Mac and iPhone use the same Apple Account, you don’t need a password:

  1. Click Wi‑Fi in the menu bar.
  2. Under Personal Hotspot, click your iPhone.

Your iPhone needs Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi on, and a cellular plan that includes Personal Hotspot.

Connect someone else’s

On the iPhone, Settings → Personal Hotspot → Allow Others to Join shows the Wi‑Fi password. Join it like any Wi‑Fi network.

Save data

Your Mac treats the hotspot as a normal Wi‑Fi network and may download big updates. In System Settings → Wi‑Fi, click Details next to the hotspot and turn on Low Data Mode.

Watch the phone’s battery

A hotspot drains your iPhone quickly. The Wi‑Fi menu shows its battery and signal. NotchMind, which I make, can keep a hotspot indicator in the notch, including the iPhone’s battery, and tells you if your Mac loses internet. See Wi‑Fi and hotspot in the notch.
