Which Macs have a notch?

Every Mac with a camera notch in its display, from the 2021 MacBook Pro to today's MacBook Air, why it's there, and what it means for notch apps.

The notch is the cut-out at the top of the screen that holds the camera. It lets the display reach closer to the top edge.

Macs with a notch

  • MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch, from the 2021 models with M1 Pro and M1 Max onward.
  • MacBook Air 13-inch, from the 2022 model with M2 onward.
  • MacBook Air 15-inch, every model, from 2023.

Macs without one

Older MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, Mac Pro, and every external display, including Apple’s Studio Display.

Why it’s there

The camera has to sit somewhere. By putting it in a notch, Apple made the bezel around the screen thinner and added a strip of screen on either side of it, where the menu bar lives.

What it means for notch apps

Notch apps such as NotchMind, which I make, are built around that space. On a Mac without a notch, many of them, NotchMind included, show a floating island at the top of the screen instead. It works, but it’s not the same as one that grows out of the camera. See the best Mac notch apps compared.

Can you hide it?

Yes; see how to hide the MacBook notch.
