How to type emoji on a Mac

Open the emoji picker on a Mac with a keystroke or the Globe key, search for emoji, and find symbols like arrows and currency signs.

The shortcut

Press ⌃ ⌘ Space in any text field. The emoji picker opens at the cursor. Type to search, for example “heart” or “rocket”, and press ↩.

The Globe key

On recent Mac keyboards, press 🌐 (or fn). If it does something else, set System Settings → Keyboard → Press 🌐 key to → Show Emoji & Symbols.

Symbols too

Click the expand button at the top right of the picker for the full Character Viewer: arrows, maths, currency, bullets and more. Add favourites so they’re one click away.

Reuse what you’ve used

The picker remembers your recent emoji at the top. For longer text you paste often, like a sign-off or an address, a clipboard history with pins helps; NotchMind, which I make, keeps pinned items one shortcut away. See clipboard history.
